There are two sign for TURTLE. The first is made with both hands in the shape of B with the thumb stretched out. The palms face the ground at waist level. The torso moves forward and backwards from the shoulders. The hands keep the same shape and rotate a little as well, one a little later than the other, resembling the turtle’s movement.
The second sign is made with both hand stationary and palms facing downwards. The thumbs flutter up and down whilst the hand do not move.
The signs for SMALL and BIG are made with both hands in the shape of C. The palms face each other in a horizontal direction. The distance between the two hands indicates the relative size of the turtle. The sign for TURTLE is used before the sign for SMALL or BIG.
The sign for MANY is used after the sign for TURTLE to express the plural. A classifier is sometimes used. In that case one or both hands in the shape of curved V is placed in various places in the signing space as though several tortoises were being placed there.
When the noun TURTLE is the subject of a verb of movement, the hand forms a curved V and is placed in a particular point in the signing space. It becomes the classifier, moving according to the action.
